($65) Bright, saturated ruby. Aromas of cassis, leather and tobacco, with a whiff of bandaid. As juicy as the Napa bottling but showing stronger fruit notes of cassis and bitter cherry, even a sweet/sour note of pomegranate. Finishes with good length. (A first sample of this wine, however, was much greener and less clean. ) Neither of these wines are up to the quality of the samples I tasted from barrel last winter.

A persistent cedary, dill-like, woody character overshadows the earth and tart wild berry flavors. Tannic but balanced, it needs short-term cellaring and decanting. 2,200 cases made.

Telltale aromas of violets, blackberries, blueberries, and crushed stones are apparent in this medium to full-bodied, slightly lean 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. Tasty and expressive, it needs 3-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well for a decade.

Dunn Vineyards is located east of St. Helena in the town of Angwin on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. In 1972 Randy and Lori purchased the original vineyard property. The winery was established in 1979, with the first harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. In 1981, the first release offered consumers 660 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain vineyards. In 1982, Dunn also released their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Currently Dunn Vineyards produces around 5000 cases of extremely age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
