($99; 83% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cab franc, 5% merlot and 3% petit verdot) Full red-ruby. Crystallized redcurrant, licorice, shoe polish, smoky oak and menthol on the nose. Dense, lush and sweet, but ultimately a Dominus of moderate size and scale. Fruit-driven flavors of redcurrant, black cherry and tobacco, with a hint of fresh herbs. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and a slight medicinal austerity. A stylish, rather Pauillac-like wine with lovely clarity of flavor. My sample had been poured into a decanter two hours before I tasted it and showed the benefits of aerating a very young cabernet-based wine. The same wine from a new bottle showed much more pungent green pepper and bay laurel aromas and a leaner texture.

Attractive for its display of balance and appealing flavors, built around plum, herb, leather and coffee. Turns dry and tannic on the finish. 6,500 cases made.

There are 6,500 cases of the 2000 Dominus (a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). It is a medium-bodied, tightly-knit offering displaying more complex aromatics than the score might suggest. Notes of cedar, saddle leather, tapenade, dried herbs, coffee, and sweet cherries and plums are present in the impressive aromatics. In the mouth, it is compact and medium-bodied. Austere/astringent tannin in the finish held my score down. Some improvement will occur with aging, but I do not see the generosity or wealth of fruit and concentration necessary to balance out the tannic structure.

Not as good as the 2003, but still pretty amazing. Ha, Dominus....

This is a beautiful, well constructed wine. Tannins still had good structure and could age at least another 10 years. I decanted it for an hour, and enjoyed dark fruits, with a nice long finish. This was a great bottle of wine.

Took 2+ hours to begin to open up. Good but not great Dominus. Think Parker may have been a little generous.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1983, the wines of Dominus Estate have been crafted in a traditional and terroir-driven style by the luminous Christian Moueix of Petrus fame. Unable to pass up the change to make what he called the Haut-Brion of Napa, Moueix came to own the legendary Napanook Vineyard through a partnership with and eventual buyout of Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, the daughters of John Daniel of Inglenook Winery. Moueix eschews irrigation, acidification, and the heavy usage of oak (18 months in French barrels, with only 1/3 new) common amongst his Napa colleagues. The exceptional terroir of Napanook in combination with his skillful viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques have repeatedly resulted in some of the most broadly enjoyable Napa Cabs available and clearly place Dominus in the upper echelon of this genre. Since 1996 the estate has released a second wine called Napanook.
