  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

($83) Deep red. Nutty oak and marzipan on the nose. Lush, sweet and forward, in the style of the vintage. Shows distinct signs of surmaturite, with rather low acidity. Notes of tobacco, chocolate and underbrush. Finishes with substantial but slightly drying tannins.

Loads of new wood showing on the nose right now, but there is beautiful ripe fruit underneath. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Slightly too much wood right now, but should come around nicely. Tasted twice, once after it had been open for 24 hours, which was much better. Needs loads of bottle age.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 92

The 2000 Barolo Pajana, dark in color and with an internationally-styled nose of cloves and incense to accompany the red currants and rose petals, is powerful and enveloping in flavor, intense and concentrated, and very firm on the finish. The slight dryness of the vintage is also present, but could well lessen with some bottle time.

  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 16

This one's charms passed me by on this occasion unfortunately. Autumn mulch on the nose. Extremely tough tannins. Mid palate weight and very earth-bound. No, not exciting on this showing.

  • This rather small estate in Monforte d'Alba is mainly known for its Barolo, but it also excels at producing great Barbera and Dolcetto and a delicious blend - Arte (Nebbiolo and Barbera). One of the leaders in the movement to modernize the winemaking process in Barolo, Domenico Clerico creates wines that are a bit more ripe fruit-oriented. However, he has such a deft and precise hand that the wines are never blowsy or overwrought. The result is wines that are attractive in their youth but gain in elegance, depth and texture as they evolve.
