Open nose with jammy and floral aromas. Medium-bodied, with round and soft tannins and a slightly alcoholic and loosely knit finish. Doesn't completely hold together.

Saturated medium ruby. Briary black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and menthol on the superripe nose. Initially a bit tight, but opened with aeration to show fresh, layered black fruit flavors of splendid depth. It's hard to imagine that there's a 2000 California cabernet with a more impressive middle palate. Finishes with great, broad, mouthcoating tannins and wonderful sweetness of fruit. This got better and better as it opened in the glass.

The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon is an amazing tour de force. Quality like this was rare, if not impossible to obtain in 2000. From bottle, the wine is performing even better than it did from cask. The color is an opaque black/ruby/purple, and the amazing aromatic concoction includes notes of melted licorice, minerals, smoky toast, and blackberry as well as cassis liqueur. Full-bodied, thick, and juicy, it is a voluptuous effort to drink now and over the next 15-16 years. It is a brilliant achievement, surpassed by none, and equaled only by a few other northern California 2000s.

Decanted for 15 minutes, probably should've been longer. Garnet rim, CA cab in the nose and mouth: cassis and other black fruits, cedar tones, well-knit, with solid tannic structure on the lengthy finish. Drinking very well, but not a life-changer or anything. Should be safe to hold for another 2-3 years though.

Located high above Lake Hennessy, the vineyards which supply this outstanding expression of Napa's bounty are some of the few influenced by the moderating influence of a relatively large body of water. At 1,500-feet, the high altitude of the Pritchard Hill area also serves to produce low yields of premium grapes that provide the dense, concentrated, black fruit aspect of this enormously complex 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1987 by Don Bryant, the wines were originally made by Helen Turley. The current winemaker is Marc Gagnon with Michel Rolland consulting.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
