($40) Deep red-ruby. Superripe, brooding nose of roasted red fruits, garrigue herbs, espresso, leather and nuts. Dense and generous in the mouth, with superb breadth of flavor but also excellent grip for such a ripe wine. This shows wonderful subtle intensity and incipient complexity. Finishes very long, firm and suave, with the fine tannins reaching the front teeth. Compelling Chateauneuf with the balance to age gracefully. (J&R Selections, Mt. Pleasant, MI; Louis/Dressner Selections, New York, NY)

The profound, opaque purple-colored 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Felix elicited the following words: |Mama-Mia!| A fabulous offering, it provides a lesson in the flavors of Provence. It is like an open air Provencal marketplace with notes of dried herbs, saddle leather, fennel, licorice, black cherries, cassis, blackberries, and tapenade. With tremendous concentration and purity, as well as powerful, balanced, full-bodied flavors, this stunning effort represents the nectar of old vines planted in the sun-drenched appellation of Chateauneuf du Pape. Although more forward than the 1998, it is equally fragrant.
Wow. At its peak. A wonderfully elegant Chateauneuf. Rose petals, spring flowers, strawberries and raspberries fill the mouth. Notes of forest floor, pine needles and damp earth add to the complexity. Tannins are perfectly integrated and silky smooth giving a soft, supple mouthfeel. This glides down the palate leaving a delicate yet persistent finish. Delicious!
