($75) Good red-ruby color. Aromas of currant, chocolate, coffee and truffle. Lush, sweet and deep for the vintage, with chocolate and smoke flavors dominating. Conveys a strong impression of soil and comes across as light on its feet. Finishes with reasonably sweet, dusty tannins but I found myself lowering my score as the finishing oakiness turned more tarry with aeration.

Beringer's top Merlot comes from their Howell Mountain vineyard known as Bancroft Ranch. The light-styled, elegant 2000 Merlot Bancroft Ranch exhibits attractive aromas of toast, chocolate, minerals, and truffles. Like many 2000s, it is narrowly constructed, and finishes abruptly. Nevertheless, it possesses pure flavors and fine balance.

Heavy-handed, mocha-laced oak dominates this otherwise rich and intense youngster that gives hints of earthy currant and wild berry. Plush-textured, this one begs for short-term cellaring or decanting.

Pretty powerful Merlot. Soft tannins on the finish. Definitely a food wine. We think this could still use a couple more years so we'll keep the rest in the cellar for a while.
