  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

($75) Bright ruby-red. Exotic crushed raspberry, blackberry and espresso on the nose, with hints of graphite and roast coffee. Chewy, lush and densely packed, with juicy flavors of black raspberry and espresso. Finishes with dusty, fine tannins and a touch of dryness.

The dense, rich 2000 Pagos Viejos possesses a saturated ruby/purple color, a layered, expansive texture, and additional oak, extract, and glycerin characteristics in the finish. It will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring, and should age for 10-15 years.

Dark ruby. Slightly vegetal on the nose with hints of oak. Muted but layered. Fruit is hidden which gives a slightly austere wine. Structure and balance are present but needs fruit to emerge. At this point, it's hard to get excited. Recently tasted 2005 is vastly more pleasurable. 50+8+6+15+6=85

Of this esteemed winery, importer Eric Solomon writes: "Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures. In fact, critics have often compared these wines to the top wines of Chambolle-Musigny and other top appellations of Burgundy. They are some of the most extraordinary examples of Tempranillo in the world."

Winemaker Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle turned this former small cooperative into a Tempranillo powerhouse on the solid foundation of his elegant wines. Since the mid-1990s, when de la Calle took control of the property, it has grown to include 75 ha of vineyards in the high altitude, chalky soils of Rioja. French oak complements the mineral-laden fruit in the top cuvees.
