($75; 72% merlot and 28% syrah) Deep red-ruby. Wilder, more animal aromas of black fruits, dark cherry, smoke, leather, licorice and game. Wonderfully sweet and stuffed with material; distinctly softer and fatter than the H Block bottling. Complex flavors of currant, plum, leather, licorice and minerals. Perhaps even longer on the finish than the H Block though not as fine, finishing with substantial dusty tannins. |A wilder, crazier, growling kind of a wine,| admits winemaker John Kongsgaard.

Mid-crimson. Light and lively and sappy. A ballet dancer. Rather racy and almost lean and Cabernet Franc-like. Really lovely with great persistence, but awfully expensive.

The 2000 Variation One comes from the Hudson Ranch, and is aged in 100% new oak (none of these wines could be called |oaky|). Its dense purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of new saddle leather and roasted meats. Although monolithic, it is medium to full-bodied and intense. Given my confidence in Kongsgaard's winemaking, it will undoubtedly reveal more |music| with 3-4 years of bottle age. A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Syrah, it should be at its finest between 2007-2016.

a surprising blend of 75% merlot and 25% sirah. Very tannic on opening but devloped nicely after 20 minutes in the decanter. Notes of spice and grilled meats; a wine with lots of backbone that paired well with steaks and prime rib.

Rich and dark with aromas of lilac, rare beef and smoke. Smooth and naturally sweet currant flavoe with ample tannins and a pleasant medium-length finish. Liked it a lot.

Not quite a newcomer, in terms of the powers behind it, Arietta was founded in 1996 as a partnership between renowned winemaker John Kongsgaard, his wife Maggy, and wine auctioneer Fritz Hatton. The Hudson Ranch (Napa/Carneros) provides the mostly Cabernet Franc of H Block and the Merlot and Syrah of Variation One. Make sure to try some of their first foray into the realm of white On The White Keys which is made from hillside Sauvignon Blanc and old vine Semillon.
