($75; with 6% viognier) Full ruby-red. Rich, smoky aromas of plum, blackberry, bitter chocolate, smoked meat, minerals, tobacco and licorice. Sweet, lush, chocolatey and seamless; a distinctly warm-climate syrah with exotic notes of roasted berries. But there's also lovely lift from the blackberry and violet notes. Finishes firmly tannic, oaky and long, with notes of spice and bitter chocolate.

A high class, limited cuvee, the 2000 Syrah (470 cases) boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to deep, chewy, black berry fruit intermixed with hints of white pepper, acacia flowers, and loamy, earthy notes. Dense and supple, with sweet tannin, it will provide delicious drinking over the next 5-6 years.

A wonderous bottle. At first sip, it was so heavy that I had to leave it behind. 2 days later, remained half bottle have changed so differently. Complex aromas of fruits & flowers, and so long finish. Want to dring another bottle.

Fully mature, inky, with surprising fruit on the nose. Tobacco and dark chocolate, without bitterness.

Medium to full bodied. Dried fruits and roses on the nose. Long lush finish with notes of cherries (acid), berries and pepper. Smooth, but getting to the end of its life.

Rich and luscious without being heavy or over the top. Not sure what the alcohol was but not at all warm. Still a bit of grip left but not one to last more than a few more years

Well structured, bold and assertive syrah. Not syrupy at all. Good tannin and length. Took about an hour in the glass to reach its potential. Continues to have depth and can last another few years.

The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel and Riesling in the 1880s, the Eisele Vineyard has been the home of world class Cabernet since 1964. The low-yielding vines lie on property just east of Calistoga, where the vines are protected by the Palisades Mountains and cooled by the breeze from the Chalk Hill Gap. The harvested fruit is rich and concentrated, lending intense character to the finished wine. Under the direction of winemaker Francoise Peschon, Araujo produces four wines each year: the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard; Altagracia, a second estate Cabernet; Syrah Eisele Vineyard; and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard. In some vintages, a Viognier may also be produced.
