  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 90

A blend of 39% Petit Verdot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 11% Cabernet Franc (an unusual combination), the inky ruby/purple-colored 1999 Reserve is a full-bodied, chewy, massive red with huge muscle and depth as well as excruciatingly high levels of tannin. It reminded me of some of the old Mt. Veeder wines from the mid-seventies. It should last ... survive may be a better word ... for 30+ years, but whether it will ever develop harmony is anyone's guess.

Deep ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, blueberry, licorice, lead pencil and Cuban tobacco. Dense and powerful but rather elegant; the petit verdot contributes to the wine tactile impression. Still rather austere; this will need considerable bottle aging. Note of dark chocolate. Finishes very long and firmly tannic. Compared to this, the Estate cabernet comes across as less dense and more tannic, but also more expressive.

  • Rudy Von Strasser has made wine since 1990 off his Diamond Mountain property, but his winemaking experience didn't start then. He was the first American intern at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in 1985. Upon his return to Napa, Rudy served as enologist at Trefethen before becoming assistant winemaker at Newton Vineyards. Armed with this influential training, he began looking for his own property from which to craft his wines. He bought the former Roddis Estate Winery and launched his label. The portfolio has grown steadily to encompass several single vineyard wines and a rarely-produced Reserve blend. Varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petite Verdot. The style is classic Diamond Mountain.
