Bright deep red. Cassis, licorice, shoe polish and sandalwood on the nose, plus a minty nuance. Suave and silky on entry, then juicy and slightly hard-edged in the middle, and still quite youthfully tight. But this wine offers very good flavor precision. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent, with a trace of dryness.

The 1999 exhibits cassis and licorice characteristics, along with considerable smoky new oak. Although the finish is angular and tough, everything else is impressive, including pure, ripe, concentrated fruit, medium body, Bordeaux-like, austere tannin, and good density, sweetness, and richness. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and enjoy it over the following decade.

I expected a lot more than this wine delivered. Good vintage and high end producer but this wine was a bit flat, fading fruit, a little thin. Not a stellar example of Vineyard 29...maybe it was my bottle although excellent provenance and storage.

What to do when you find the land you purchased for retirement is, in fact, perfectly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon...in Napa? Plant a vineyard and start a new career. Teresa Norton and Tom Paine did just that in 1989, planting 3 acres under the direction of legendary vineyard manager David Abreu. In 1992 the first vintage was released - 250 cases of estate Cabernet. Philippe Melka became winemaker in 1999, and soon after Teresa and Tom decided to really retire. They sold Vineyard 29 to Churck and Anne McMinn. A new winery was built, caves were dug, and production increased with the purchase of a second vineyard, Aida, planted to Cabernet, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. From these two vineyards, the estate wines are produced: Vineyard 29 Cabernet Sauvignon, Vineyard 29 Sauvignon Blanc, Aida Red Wine, and Aida Zinfandel.
