The 1999 Cask 23 exhibits a deep plum/garnet color with purple nuances. Vanilla, espresso, lavender, and sweet red as well as black currants emerge from the stylish bouquet, which promises more than the palate delivers. The wine is medium-bodied, a bit angular, with austere tannin, excellent purity, but little depth and intensity. Anticipated maturity: now-2011. Perhaps my opinion is in the minority, but I can't understand anyone suggesting that this winery is making wine today as profound as it did in the seventies and eighties. But then again, wine tasting is very subjective.

Wonderful complexity and sense of harmony and finesse, with rich, intense, supple layers of currant, black cherry, anise, game and coffee. Long, rich aftertaste. Should only improve over the next decade. 2,347 cases made.

Cask 23 is made up of a blend of the best lots from the SLV and Fay vineyards. Generally, it takes more time than either of these vineyards to display its breeding. For instance, 1985 Cask 23 remains one of my most memorable California Cabernets but it can still spend more than a few years in the cellar with no degradation. In keeping with the overall character of the '99 vintage, this Cask is going to need at least a decade in the cellar before consumption. At present, gorgeous aromas of graham crackers, dark chocolate, blackberries, and vanilla are discernable. Precisely structured with the requisite tannins and acidity for aging, I wish more of this wine was in my cellar.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley's most established and respected producers. The winery was founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and it is best known for estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons - CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, the wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown.
