  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

Good medium ruby. Aromas of currant, licorice and herbs. Sweeter and fuller on entry than the Stags Leap cabernet, with blackcurrant and blackberry flavors. Then somewhat austere on the back half, and a bit dominated by its structure today. The substantial tannins are broad and ripe, and there's lovely lingering flavor here.

Ripe, rich and plush, with complex currant, herb, tea and cedar notes supported by rich, loamy tannins and hints of mocha and berry on the finish. A gorgeous young Cabernet.

This is a harmonious, complex effort that would be more comfortable in a Bordeaux tasting. The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville shows a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to an excellent, pure nose of black currants intermixed with spicy oak and minerals. However, the wine is compressed and lean in the mouth, with the zesty acidity giving the impression of an attenuated, pinched finish.

  • Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 and for decades has produced quality California wines that represent New World innovation on a global scale. The winery is located in Oakville, at the center of Napa Valley. The Mondavi family is well known for its dedication to research and experimentation in winemaking, as well as for helping establish the modern-day wine business in the post-Prohibition era. Some of Mondavi's innovations include the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960s. Furthermore, Mondavi's technological innovations to improve the quality of wine and its focus on natural farming techniques have made a fundamental impact on the industry as a whole. For over 20 years Mondavi has been a leader in environmental responsibility, promoting sustainable farming and conservation.

The Robert Mondavi Winery produces wine in four categories: Napa Valley Wines, District Wines, Reserve Wines, and Limited Availability Wines. The Napa Valley wines are made from fruit blended across the region, whereas the District wines reflect the terroir of a particular appellation within the Valley. The Reserve wines are made from selected vineyard fruit that benefits from cellar aging. The Limited Availability Wines are unique varietal expressions (or blends) whose fruit is sourced from venerable vineyards throughout the Napa Valley and Carneros.
