  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 88

($68; assembled in cuve and on its finings; as was the case with the '98, this has been strengthened by the addition of Rostaing's Viaillere juice) Full medium ruby. Smoky, roasted aromas dominated by brown spices. Juicy redcurrant and pepper flavors nicely framed by solid acidity. Tightly wound and quite powerful. Finishes with a firm tannic spine.

    Issue: January/February 2002

This still has some time to go, showing a slightly aggressive edge to the black pepper, olive, tobacco and currant confiture notes. Surprisingly dark and grippy through the finish, with lingering tobacco and black tea notes, though this really harmonizes nicely as it airs, so decant or cellar further. An impressive showing for the basic cuvee.

The 1999 Cote Rotie Cuvee Classique (14,000 bottles produced) is a brilliant example that should age well for 15+ years. Its sexy concoction of jammy black fruits intermixed with violets, acacia flowers, cherry liqueur, and creme de cassis jumps from the glass. The wine is exotic and nearly port-like, with sweet levels of glycerin coating the mouth, low acidity, and fabulous concentration as well as purity. It is impossible to resist, but it will last for two decades. Rene Rostaing was apologetic for his 1999s, undoubtedly the greatest vintage he has ever produced. He was quick to point out that they are |atypical and too rich.| Excuse me! This is Cote Rotie at its most concentrated and seductive. One of the most intelligent winemakers in Cote Rotie, Rene Rostaing continues to exhibit maturity as well as wisdom with the conditions he confronts in each vintage.

  • Rene Rostaing is unarguably one of the most talked-about producers in Cote-Rotie. He started as a fairly small producer, but his wines have grown in quality, reputation, and production. He vinifies his parcels separately and makes his wines in a more traditional fashion. New oak is kept to about 10% to guarantee the elegant style which is so spectacular in the area. Vintages to look for are 2003, 2001, 1999, 1991, 1985, 1978, and 1971.
