($225) Full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, cola, root beer and coconut. Thick, dense and concentrated, with exotic, slightly candied dark fruit, caramel, toasted coconut and mineral flavors nicely shaped by firm acids. Shows strong fruit and a major dose of oak on the powerful, backward finish. This can't quite match the 1998 for sheer depth of fruit, but it's built to age.

100% Shiraz. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), McLaren Vale, Padthaway blend.Lively, fresh, racy - one of the leaner, more austere, more claret-like examples. Exceptionally dry finish - really tough in fact at the moment.

Not quite as broad and generous as riper vintages, but tremendously classy, offering smoky, earthy blackberry, plum and currant fruit that compete effectively against cedary oak on the long finish. The flavors gain with each sip, fanning out impressively. It's tight now, but it could age beautifully. 8,000 cases made.

The 1999 Grange does not come close to such great Granges as the 1998, 1996, 1991, and 1990. Dense ruby/purple to the edge, with a bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, and floral-like aromas, and medium to full body, the 1999 has an acid punch, but also tremendous layers of fruit and extract. Not massive, but elegant and nicely layered, it requires another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for 12-15 years.

Deep red/almost purple robe; lovely sweet notes on the nose, heady like; wonderful on the palate with silky tannins, fresh acidity and notes of blackcurrants, balckberries and spice; a very long aftertaste; will only get better; fabulous

Over the past 40 years, Penfolds has earned its reputation as Australia's premier red wine producer and has played a large part in putting Australian wines on the world map. Over the past five years, winemaker Peter Gago has been instrumental in keeping Penfolds at the top of the Austrailian wine industry. Penfolds Grange, the estate's flagship, is characterized by its rich texture, complexity, and concentrated fruit. Penfolds's entire collection spans across many styles and labels including Penfolds Super Premiums, Special Bin Range, Cellar Reserve Range, Bin Range, Thomas Hyland Range, Koonunga Hill Range, Rawson's Retreat Range, and Fortified Wines.
More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
