    ($45) Medium ruby. Primal aromas of blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate and charred oak. Fat, dense and rich, with a chewy texture and good depth; flavors of briary mountain berries along with hints of mocha, espresso and herbs. Still rather tightly wound, with juicy acids dominating the youthful fruit. Finishes with even, toothdusting tannins and firm acidity.

    The sensational 1999 Spring Mountain cuvee offers beautiful mocha, fudge, and black fruit scents with notions of high quality toasty oak in the background. The wine is well-knit, long, and opulently-textured, with terrific purity as well as intensity. It will drink well for 10-14 years.

  • Paloma Vineyard is located five miles west of St. Helena at the top of Spring Mountain. In the last half of the 19th century it was a vineyard, but was allowed to return to forest at about the turn of the century. Proprietors Barbara and Jim Richards still find old redwood grape stakes and even a few old zinfandel vines that survive under the large Douglas fir trees that surround their home on the property. One vine near the house even produces one or two clusters of grapes a year that are put into the Paloma Merlot blend for good luck.

    The purchase of this raw land was the beginning of an odyssey that is ongoing and ever changing, but with one goal - to grow the best grapes possible and to make wines that reflects the terroir of our vineyard.

    The elevation of Paloma Vineyard is 2060 feet above sea level at the bottom of the property and 2240 at the top, exposure is generally east with many variations, and the soils are derived from the Sonoma volcanics and from Franciscan sandstone. Total acreage is 20 acres with 15 acres planted.

    California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
