  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($300; 100% merlot) Intense blackish ruby. Big, brooding nose of superripe plum, sage and other Mediterranean herbs. Extraordinarily plush, with raspberry jam filling the mouth. Big, dusty tannins underscore the intense and very long finish, redolent of roasted espresso beans and vanilla.

    Issue: July/August 2003
  • Rating: 96

The 1999 Masseto is a cool, inward wine graced with exquisite finesse, but it still needs a few years in bottle to show its potential. That said, it is pretty spectacular even today. This is a vintage that will appeal to readers who enjoy firm, structured wines.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 94

The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Masseto offers a fabulous bouquet of sweet oak, black raspberries, blackberries, currants, new wood, and licorice. Firmly-structured and medium to full-bodied yet remarkably elegant, this impressive beauty needs 3-4 years of cellaring, and should age for 15+ years.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 95

Beautiful violet, berry and raspberry character. Very fruity and pretty. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. This is seductive and modern. It shows excellent potential for aging.

  • A premiere estate located in Tuscany's Bolgheri coast, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia produces the renowned Merlot-based blends Masseto, Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove, and Le Volte. The unique microclimate and combination of clay in the soil eventually proved ideal, epitomized by the 2001 Masseto, which garnered 100 points from the Wine Spectator. The pinnacle achievement at Ornellaia, the Masseto has developed a cult following for its limited allocation.

Ornellaia, a Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend which debuted in 1985, is the estate's signature wine. Le Serre Nuove, which requires less aging and displays a more fruit forward style, is something of a "second wine" and joins Le Volte, a Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot blend, as wines at a younger age.
