Good deep red. Brambly red fruits (the young 2000 is very black fruit by comparison), spices, minerals and underbrush on the nose. Surprisingly sweet for this wine but still tightly wound, with a firm spine of acidity. Much less pliant today than the '98 version, with the bright, spicy flavors of toasty red fruits still rather unforthcoming. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a firmer impression than the 2000.

Medium ruby. The 1999 Le Vigne presents a highly aromatic, perfumed nose and gorgeous layers of bright, focused red fruit on a medium-bodied frame, with excellent length and concentration. This firmly structured Barolo remains a model of restrained elegance and finesse that strikes a gorgeous balance between traditional and modern expressions of Barolo. It will benefit from a few years of bottle age and drink well until age 20.

Shows gorgeous strawberry tart aromas, with fresh flowers and subtle vanilla bean. Full-bodied, with seamless tannins and a solid core of beautiful fruit. Lots of new wood. Needs more time to come together.

Blow away good. Drank right out of the bottle and was a little cold and closed. Over two hour drinking window, became pretty much perfect; not the best Barolo I've ever had but very tasty. Amber in color, fruit, but not overpowering. Decant at least one hour, perhaps even longer.

Really tangy on the front end but oddly enough, starting to show some aging.

Long esteemed as a leading producer of the Piedmont, Luciano Sandrone is sometimes mislabeled a "modernizer" of the of the region. In truth, he is more of a relaxer of the mediums that make the wines here long-lived, but difficult to get around in their youth. The wines combine the lovely floral and leather/spice aromatics typical of Barolo with balanced red and dark fruit that is liberally dosed with appealing high-toned acidity.
