  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

Full ruby-red. Captivating nose of roasted currant, cedar and minerals, with a floral lift; quite fresh for the year. Sweet, supple, dense and full, with no dip in the middle. This is impressively chewy and concentrated for a '99. Finishes long and flavorful, with sweet, building tannins.

Sweet and muscular and a bit more concentrated than most but - I would submit, m'lud - not more fun. Pretty chunky tannins. Awkward and stolid and thick. Not much appeal. But long, playing the density card.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 91

The 1999 Leoville Las Cases possesses a dense purple color as well as classic aromas of vanilla, black cherries, and currants mixed with subtle toasty oak. The wine is medium-bodied with sweet tannin, yet it remains young, backward, and unevolved (unusual for a 1999). Its extraordinary purity and overall harmony give it a character all its own. This excellent Las Cases will be at its finest between 2006-2022.

Warm and exciting wine from a slightly frigid vintage. Black ruby color. Rich and powerful nose, with loads of currant, smoke and tobacco. Full-bodied and silky, polished and long. 15,000 cases made.

Nice. Smooth and ready to drink. Overrated overall. Not enough fruit or complexity.

The Second Growth classified estate of Leoville Las Cases continues to produce wines of exceptional quality, rivaling those of the First Growth producers. The wines are full-bodied, concentrated and complex, and have tremendous aging potential. Typical blends consist of over 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, with lesser amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot. Bargain hunters should also keep an eye out for the estate's second label, Clos du Marquis.
