  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

Reticent, cool nose hints at lime blossom and mint. Penetrating, tightly wound and crisp, with strong citrus skin flavors. A leanish, youthfully unevolved wine with great vivacity and finesse, but in need of a good six to eight years of additional bottle aging. Very long and pure on the back end.

Rich almond aromas emerge from the 1999 Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet. Medium-bodied and oily-textured, it is ample, plump, and has excellent grip. Its flavor profile, composed of white and yellow fruits intermingled with nuts, lasts throughout the finish.

The powerful aromas of honeysuckle and roasted nuts are now nuanced with a hint of petrol and what were tight, structured flavors are now beginning to unfold and open yet the same stunning purity and intensity are still present as is the near perfect acid-fruit balance. This still delivers unusually strong minerality for Bienvenues as well as fine detail, outstanding complexity and persistence. For my tastes, this is just now beginning to drink well and it should continue to do so for another decade. Note however that those who prefer well-aged flavors will be best served to wait another 2 to 3 years.

  • "If the blessed slopes of the Cote d'Or are home to the ultimate expression of Chardonnay, then Anne-Claude Leflaive could be regarded as the magician, some might use the word "shaman", who can conjure wine like no other from this propitious terroir." - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
