($83) Good full deep red. Complex aromas of wild red fruits, underbrush and minerals, complicated by hints of earth, herbs and game. Sweeter and riper than the village and premier cru bottlings, with much more buffering volume to support its fairly sizable tannic structure. Still, the tannins are slightly dusty.

Fresh and lovely, with chocolate mousse character. Smooth, balanced, medium-bodied and supple, with hints of blackberry. Seductive finish displays mineral and wet earth terroir complexity. 3,330 cases made.

Smudgey, pruney, enveloping bouquet with quite a bit of development. Lots of freshness - tingly, exciting, even racy with luscious fruit. Already drinking well. (JR)

The dark ruby-colored 1999 Clos Des Lambrays exhibits blackberry, cassis, blood orange, and spice aromas. It is medium-bodied, with a well-made candle wax, blackberry, cassis, and hoisin sauce-flavored personality. This spicy, extroverted wine is velvety-textured and appealing. Grand crus of the Cote de Nuits were entitled to 46 hectoliters per hectare yields (including the PLC) and the Domaine des Lambrays produced 45.5 hectoliters per hectare. My impression is that they would have achieved a more concentrated, deeper, and longer finishing wine if their yields had been more moderate. Drink this wine over the course of the next 10-12 years.

This vineyard near Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits produced stellar wines in the 1940s and fully deserved Grand Cru status, yet this was not achieved until 1981. Under owners Roland de Chambure, the Saier family and oenologist Thierry Brouin, the "sleeping beauty" vineyard succeeded in making a comeback after having fallen into disrepair in the 1970s. In 1996 after being sold again, the new owners, Gunter and Ruth Freund, restored the chateau and re-established the successful path that Lambrays has since followed.

The wines are studies in finessed concentration and exhibit an enchanting blend of fruit, spice and mineral that continues to evolve on the palate and in the cellar. In addition to the Morey St Denis reds, Lambrays also produces a few Chardonnays from Puligny Montrachet.
