Loads of rich, viscous fig, apricot, nectarine and a touch of honey is this deeply concentrated, almost syrupy bottling. Finishes with a luxurious aftertaste of exotic spices. 1,853 cases made.

Slightly hazy, pale yellow-gold. Superripe yet reticent aromas of dried fruits, minerals and hazelnut. Broad, rich and sweet but with perfectly harmonious acidity; highly concentrated, layered and suave. Intriguing stony and nutty nuances. Very long on the aftertaste.

The 1999 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard boasts a phenomenal perfume of sweet white corn mixed with wet rocks, candied citrus, smoke, and tropical fruit. It is full-bodied, with remarkable length and intensity. This brilliant offering should last 5-6 years. Steve Kistler and his sidekick, Mark Bixler, feel that the key to making top quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 2000 (an extremely cold year with higher acids) was patience. Some years the flavors come early, and in other years they are much later.

Excellent, but almost dessert like now with carmel and candy across the paalte. like an old corton charlemagne

In 1979, Kistler first planted this high altitude 35-acre vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. While early Kistler Cabernets were fine efforts (with great pleasure I drank a lot of the 1982(?) after finding it gathering dust in Carmel Valley over a decade ago), eventually the Cabernet program was discontinued. An additional six acres of Chardonnay was added in 1995. Kistler smartly planted the vineyard to the Mount Eden clone ? the clone that Martin Ray exploited with great success for his Santa Cruz Mountains (Saratoga) Chardonnays in the fifties and the source of today?s superb Chardonnays from Mount Eden Vineyards. A medium gold hue with an initially muted bouquet of light toasty nuances, balsawood, lemon, and sweet pear. Because they are unfiltered, many Kistler Chardonnays, including this one, are slightly cloudy rather than perfectly clear wine. Technocrats will mark a wine down for this |flaw? but informed oenophiles will realize exactly what this trait means ? you have a living wine in your glass. Huge Chardonnay fruit in the mouth but the wine?s bright acidity keeps things lively. Incredible length.

Kistler Vineyards is a small family-owned winery located in the Russian River Valley specializing in Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since its first vintage in 1979, the winery has grown in size to produce 25,000 cases per year. Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler share the winemaking responsibilities, while Mark also acts as chemist and business manager. The winery, completed in 1992, is located on their Vine Hill Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Kistler's fruit is sourced from various vineyards across Napa and Sonoma counties. Kistler Vineyards' wines are released semi-annually and almost exclusively to its mailing list.
