  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

Full saturated ruby. Aromas of blackberry, currant, licorice, mint and shoe polish. Sweet, lush and fairly large-scaled, with rich black fruit flavors. A fruit-driven rather than gamey style of syrah, finishing with ripe, spreading tannins that reach the teeth. More complex and distinctly riper than a '99 syrah from Monterey that will be sold only at the winery.
    Author: Stephen Tanzer
    Issue: May/June 2002
  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 87

Good intensity and purity of flavor, with spicy herb-laced plum and blackberry flavors that turn smooth and polished.

Nose had flattened out a little. Still had ggod rich mouth...nice pepper, and blackberry. Good wine.

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
