  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

A rich, deftly balanced style, loaded with complex earthy currant, black cherry, anise, coffee and mocha flavors that are sharply focused. Long and concentrated on the finish, with a leathery streak working its way in.

  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

Good bright ruby. Roasted, smoky aromas of blackcurrant and coffee. Sweeter and more layered than the '99 merlot, with more nuanced black fruit and mineral flavors. Firm acids and tannins give this fairly dense wine a solid underlying backbone.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 88

The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon is lean, austere, and displays its cool climate character. It reveals aromas and flavors of tobacco and cedar as well as a Bordeaux-like texture, and astringent tannin in the finish.

Concentrated ripe, sweet fruit is complemented by roasted red and black fruit flavors and a smoky oak component.

Seems better each time I open a bottle over time. Great buy. Huge tannins now softening with still complex dark fruit for a $40 bottle (release price) California cab.

    Still a bit closed.

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
