|Bonnes Mares comes from the earth, Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses from the air,| said Mugnier. The ruby-colored 1999 Bonnes Mares has an earthy, sweet berry-scented nose. It is light to medium-bodied, austere, firm, and foursquare. Crisp cherries, stones, gravel, and minerals can be found in its rugged, almost hard character. I am concerned that its tannin will dominate its delicate fruit.

Bright full red. Very ripe, expressive aromas of roasted strawberry, mocha, cocoa powder and pepper. Lush, silky and fat; a very rich, dense Bonnes-Mares with a Bordeaux-like texture and lovely harmonious acidity. Doesn't offer the charm of Chambolle but this very solid wine has a strong tannic backbone for aging.

Similar in style to the Amoureuses though less forward and much more structured. Frank attack with dusty finishing tannins. Lovely, powerful and superbly long with grand cru size.
