Ruby-red. Profound aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and violet. Superripe and thick in the mouth, with sauvage flavors of black fruits, mocha, iron and game. Velvety and seamless. Finishes with ripe, oak-enhanced tannins and a note of dark chocolate.

Tasted at the Denis Bachelet dinner at Quality Chop House. The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 1999 from Dominique Laurent has a rich, ripe, mulberry and briary-scented bouquet that displays commendable intensity. Typical of Laurent's style, it is rounded and sensual, quite plush in the mouth. It is slightly lower in acidity vis-a-vis the Charmes-Chambertin from Denis Bachelet and misses some precision on the finish, but the length on this suave Grand Cru should be appreciated.

While there is a bit of unintegrated wood present, it's not enough to really detract from the otherwise pretty and solidly complex earth and game suffused red berry fruit aromas that reflect only a touch of secondary development, which is not all that surprising given the large format. The still relatively firmly structured flavors possess good size and weight as well as mid-palate concentration and culminate in an attractively long finish. I would be inclined to hold this for another 6 to 10 years and it should be well worth the wait.

Gobs of new wood but a very pleasant example of Charmes in a super year
