Highly nuanced, musky nose combines lemon, truffle and toasty, charred oak. Big, rich and vibrant; already wonderfully aromatic in the mouth. A large-scaled, layered wine that unfolds slowly and lingers long on the aftertaste. The old-vines component of this wine featured a full 13.8% alcohol with a low pH of 3.18.

Liquorice scents and real spine of structure. Creamy, concentrated and utterly correct (ie, no sweetening up or specious oak). Quite alcoholic and perhaps just very slightly over the top for some palates but certainly un-ignorable.

So subtle and elegant, this refined Meursault soars on the palate, both light and powerful. Plenty of tropical flavors, with toasted oak, spice and gingerbread, but above all a great intensity of citrus and mineral character on the finish. 840 cases made.

Talcum powder, perfume, and flowers can be discerned in the aromatics of the 1999 Meursault Les Charmes. Medium-bodied and silky, it offers toast, mineral, white currant, and crisp pear flavors. It is tangy, flavorful, extremely well-balanced, and graceful. This wine also boasts an admirably long, smooth finish. Drink it over the next 7-9 years.

A massive nose that explodes from the glass offering warm toast, peach and apricot notes and a very ripe flavor profile that give way to rich, thick, relatively dense flavors with more minerality and elegance than usual. Finishes with almost painful intensity and a subtle, fine, quite nuanced complexity. Very impressive juice and almost matches the PerriŠres in quality.
    Issue: 3rd Quarter, 2002

Brilliant gold with light green hints, crisp flinty nose with some straw and minerality, took awhile to open up. Beautiful wine on the palate, great balance of spicy fruit, chalky minerality, and light oak hints. Very, very long and could still improve further.

This wine was showing signs of carmelization and seemed like it was prematurely aged.

Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.
