  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 88

Medium ruby-red, with a hint of development at the rim. Pungent aromas of black and green pepper, musky coffee and leather, plus a hint of surmaturite. Offers good sweetness and concentration but could use a bit more delineation and brightness. Flavors not as ripe as the 16% alcohol would suggest. Somewhat drying tannins coat the teeth.

Not very successful is the 1998 Zinfandel Black-Sears. As Larry Turley acknowledged, their hottest terroirs often did the best in the cool 1998 growing season. A dense garnet/ruby color is followed by scents of raspberries, underbrush, loamy soil, plum liqueur, and pepper. Spicy and ripe, but less expressive and thick compared to previous vintages, it is an excellent Zinfandel for consuming over the next 4-5 years. For statisticians, the alcohol level is 16%, so there is no obvious lack of ripeness, even from this cool, high altitude vineyard.

  • Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.
