Decidedly herbal, with moderately ripe currant, earth, sage and wild berry flavors, too. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 4,311 cases made.Author: James LaubeInternational Wine Cellar | Rating: 87
Good red-ruby. High-toned aromas of plum, currant, tobacco, chocolate and fresh herbs. Pliant and supple on entry, then a bit green toward the back end, with light but slightly drying tannins. This has good texture but could use more verve.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2001Jancis Robinson | Rating: 17
Ripe and mineral and luscious on the nose. Very, very very slightly stewed on the nose. Sweet start on the palate, could do with just a tad more acidity and freshness. Soft and round. (LM)Author: Jancis RobinsonWine Advocate | Rating: 90
The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits lots of blueberry fruit, in addition to an attractive, elegant, medium-bodied style. It is a successful wine for the vintage. It should be uncommonly precocious, forward, and delicious when released.Author: Robert Parker

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
