  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 14

Deep crimson. Some charred notes on the nose. Very brutal and almost sour. Horribly exaggerated oak tannins. Hole in the middle. Bad bottle.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 95

Nearly exaggerated levels of intensity, extract, and richness are apparent in this opaque blue/purple-colored wine. Sumptuous aromas of blueberries, blackberries, and cherries combine with smoke, licorice, vanillin, and truffles to create a compelling aromatic explosion. The wine is fabulously dense, full-bodied, and layered, with multiple dimensions, gorgeous purity, and superbly integrated acidity as well as tannin. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage, it possesses immense potential, but patience is required.

  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

Saturated medium ruby. Blackberry, cocoa powder, melted toffee and smoky oak on the nose. Very concentrated and delineated, with a sappy sweetness and chewy density. Dark fruit and dark chocolate flavors are framed and carried by juicy acids. Finishes with firm, even tannins that avoid dryness. Extremely young wine, but showing spectacularly well already.

Very new-wave style.Wonderfully attractive. Dark color. Gorgeous aromas of berry, violet and toasted oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and an intense fruity, chocolate aftertaste.

A bit of a disapointment :(. Deep and dense but missing some of the subtile notes in St Emilion's I have enjoined. Flavors of black currants, white truffle andpepper. But simply lacking in freshness and a weak delivery. Sorry, Pavie-M... not giving up on you but this one was a bust...

Pavie-Macquin is a bio-dynamically farmed estate with a wealth of old vines from which to source fruit. Consequently, the wines are manifestations of incredible intensity and concentration balanced by an abundance of fruit purity, mineral and a healthy grip. The Macquin name comes from Albert Macquin, who in his time was an authority on the grafting European vines onto American rootstock after the phylloxera tragedy of the late 1800s. The current decade has brought Pavie-Macquin a dramatic surge in quality due to the expert intervention of Nicolas Thienpont (Vieux Chateau Certan), Michel Rolland and Stephane Derenoncourt. In the 2006 reclassification of St Emilion, it was promoted to the level of Premier Grand Cru Classe.
