  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

(78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.4 g/l total acidity; 13.2% alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas and flavors are lifted by pungent graphite, cedar and mineral notes. Balanced, pure and smooth in the mouth, with excellent perfume and precision. Finishes long and pure, with lingering cassis and leather notes. This is another Lynch-Bages that has picked up volume and flesh from bottle aging. It's a very classic Pauillac and a wine that can still improve with additional cellaring.

Big and beefy and still very young and even quite raw. Still quite chewy. By no means the most delicious wine here even if it is the most recognisable and valuable! A bit jagged in terms of acidity.ÿ

Extremely well done. Dark, with lots of vanilla, strawberry, cherry and currant aromas. Full-bodied, with big, silky tannins and a long, caressing finish.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 87

Slightly austere, leafy and herbal, the fresh 1998 lacks concentration, fat and fruit depth. It reveals a hint of herbs interwoven with attractive red and black currant aromas, but the wine falls off on the palate, and requires drinking up as it is likely to become increasingly desiccated.

Located just outside the town of Pauillac, Chateau Lynch Bages is famous for its Cabernet-based wines, which typify the best of the appellation. The estate is classified as one of eighteen Fifth Growths from the official 1855 classification; many experts, though, would argue that its quality merits it a place among the Second Growths. Typical Lynch-Bages reveals a wonderful bouquet, rich tannins, a long finish, and softness and complexity with age. From its founding in the 1600s, the chateau was owned by many generations of the Lynch family, and in the 1930s, was purchased by the Cazes family, who continue operations today. The finest vintages over the last fifty years include 1961, 1982, 1989, 1990, 1996 and 2000. In addition to its flagship red, Chateau Lynch Bages also produces a white wine and a second label called Haut Bages Averous.
