1998 Château Lascombes
FRANCE / BORDEAUX / MARGAUX
Wine Advocate | Rating: 86
The light-styled 1998 Lascombes offers sweet cherry fruit intermixed with cedar, spice box, and dried herbs. Although it lacks depth, this offering is symmetrical, well-balanced, and elegant.Author: Robert Parker
Named after its first owner, Chevalier de Lascombes, this Margaux ranked Second Growth vineyard produces powerful, tannic, yet elegant wines. Once owned by Chaix d'Est-Ange, a General to Napoleon III, Lascombes encountered a revival in the mid 20th century under the control of Alexis Lichine. Many decades later, Colony Capital bought the estate and controls the vineyard to date. Currently, the vines are comprised of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petite Verdot.
Lascombes produces a second wine, Chevalier des Lascombes, named after its original owner, with a fruitier flavor profile that requires less aging (about 5 to 10 years). The chateau also employs two second labels, Segonnes and La Gombaude, for its lesser wines.
