  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 92

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc aged in 45% new oak, this terrific l'Evangile is stuffed with concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit. There is also an acacia-like floral character that gives the wine even more complexity. Notes of toffee, licorice, and truffles add to the aromatic fireworks. The wine is full-bodied, with superb purity as well as moderate tannin in the finish.

Captivating aromas of wild raspberry, cherry, mineral and grilled meat mark this full-bodied wine, along with huge, silky tannins and an extra-long, caressing finish. Envelops the palate like a perfectly tailored silk shirt. Incredible class, with everything in wonderful proportions. The greatest L'Evangile ever made. 3,000 cases made.

Deep ruby. Vibrant, high-pitched aromas of dark berries, iron, leather and fresh blood. Very firm and lively on the attack; dense but bright, with wild flavors of dark berries, minerals and game. Not quite as silky as the 2000 but sharply delineated and very long on the aftertaste, which hints at maple syrup and dark chocolate. Firm tannins coat the teeth.

Relatively pale with a light rim. More attenuated than the Eglise Clinet. No great concentration and already quite evolved on the nose. The opposite of a blockbuster but with finesse. ÿQuite evolved with the fruit in retreat but very harmonious already. This would make a lovely bottle for current drinking.ÿNeat finish with medum persistence. Not as rich or sweet as the glise Clinet.

In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired L'Evangile from the Ducasse family, who had run the property since around 1900. DBR was interested in bringing sustained care to the operation. DBR's initial influence included a more refined selection of the fine wines, and the creation of Blason de L'Evangile as a second wine. Efforts also included enhancing the vines' health with a restoration and renewal plan partially completed until 1998. The complete renovation of the vat room and the cellar which was finished in 2004 allowed the property to complete its new configuration.

A remarkable decade of vintages from 1995 to 2005 crowned the work with success. Among these, 1995, 1996, 200 and an exceptional 2005 stand out!
