Lots to admire here, with layers of mocha, vanilla, currant, black cherry and blackberry, turning elegant, with cedar and tobacco notes on the finish.Author: James LaubeInternational Wine Cellar | Rating: 87
Medium ruby. Cassis, spice, dark chocolate and a faint weediness on the nose. Less sweet in the middle than the merlot due to a slightly edgy green quality, but has chewy fruit and texture. Finishes with substantial dusty, slightly drying tannins.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2001Wine Advocate | Rating: 86
The evolved 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon displays rustic tannin in the finish as well as a lean personality. A dark ruby color is accompanied by attractive aromas and flavors of dried herbs, black fruits, earth, and wood.Author: Robert Parker

Not very impressed with this wine. Took an hour in the decanter to get past intial toughness. Afterward, mostly laced with strong oak nose and taste. Finish was short. I am usually enamored by the regular Phelps Cab bottling, but in this case I was very disappoionted.Author: Greg GAnonymous | Rating:
This 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon developed into a beautifully proportioned wine offering blackberry, roast coffee and chocolate aromas, and layered fruit flavors with supportive tannins that lead to a long, balanced finish.Author: GeerWade
Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
