A bigger, richer wine than the Cuvee Chaupin, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is full-bodied, rich and silky on the palate, with classic Janasse notes of barbecue smoke, licorice, peppery herbs and smoked black fruits. I've been lucky enough to have multiple bottles of this recently, all of which have shown beautifully. There's no upside, but it will continue drinking nicely through 2023.

Dark and surprisingly brawny, with bacon fat, prune, cocoa and toast notes leading the way. Hints of cedar and beef chime in on the slightly chewy finish, which shows a roasted edge. Has impressive power, but the note of torrefaction is atypical for the vintage.

Saturated bright ruby. Sweet, liqueur-like aromas of black fruits, cocoa powder and licorice; showing its mourvedre component today. Impressively dense and sweet but quite closed today in the middle. At its best now on the wonderfully expanding peacock tail of a finish, which features lush, dusty tannins, superb persistence and a late note of black pepper. Has the vibrancy and structure to reward extended aging.

Very dark with aged rim. Licorice and spice on the nose. Sweet and disjointed cough medicine. Terribly dry tannins. Finishes very suddenly, Not an ad for Chƒteauneuf.

A wine of explosive concentration married to a charming sense of finesse that keeps its opulence honest. The aromas were initially a bit restrained and backward, revealing notions of sandalwood, violet and blackberry liqueur in the background. While it smelled a touch tight, the palate unwound w/ aeration to showcase deep layers of pepper, dark cherries, spicebox and a fine sense of minerality. Certainly a stunner and probably could use a bit more bottle age to round itself into even more impressive form.

Up until 1973, patriarch and proprietor Aime Sabon sold the entire production of this estate to cooperatives. In 1991, his son Christophe took over the running of the Domaine La Janasse, named after a family camp in Courthezon. The grapes that go into the "Cuvee Chaupin" come from a parcel of vines planted in 1912 and produce the pure, graceful, yet opulent and firmly structured wines for which the domaine has become renowned. Roughly a quarter of these wines are AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.
