  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

($55; bottled in September of 2001) Bright ruby-red. Reticent but complex nose hints at black raspberry, gunflint, cracked pepper, minerals and leather. Hugely rich and deep, with terrific texture and flavor intensity and gripping Hermitage structure. Finishes with a distinct note of peppery austerity. Extremely young, and likely to be very long-lived.

The powerful, backward 1998 Hermitage was produced from wine purchased from such vineyards as Les Bessards, Les Baumes, Meal, and Dionnieres. It is powerful, tannic, slightly austere, but long in the mouth with copious quantities of cassis fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. To assess Guigal's Hermitage, I tasted through every element that will be blended together for the assemblage, including those cuvees from Grippat's and De Vallouit's vineyards as well as wine purchased from growers such as Sorrel and Fayolle. Readers will notice a significant increase in the quality of Guigal's Hermitage beginning with 1999, largely because of the fruit from Grippat and De Vallouit (particularly the latter's Les Greffieres).

  • Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
