($90; bottled the week prior to my visit; the wine's six major components are assembled only just prior to the bottling) Full medium ruby. Explosive aromas of cassis, brown spices, tar, mocha, spearmint and crushed pepper. Sweet, spicy and highly concentrated, with black fruit and pepper flavors given clarity and grip by solid underlying structure. Very long and aromatic on the back end, with pepper and spicy oak notes. Perhaps the best vintage yet for this bottling, which was inaugurated with the excellent '95.

Dark crimson. Some rather old oak but intense fruit on the nose. Smells relatively evolved. A big splash on the front palate! But drying and a little fake somehow on the back palate. No delicacy.Quite a hot finish but no shortage of impact.

The extraordinary 1998 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is more structured, powerful, and concentrated than the 1997. My ratings for the component parts ranged from a low of 90-92 for La Grande Plantee, to a high of 94-96 for La Pommiere and Pavillon Rouge. All revealed huge colors, earthy, smoky noses with bacon fat and black currants, and various degrees of tannin. This is unquestionably a vintage for patient connoisseurs as it requires cellaring. It is dense, chewy, and muscular. This wine will be at its finest between 2007-2020.

Drinking beautifully right now. Decanted for 90 min before drinking. Great nose, complex, fine mid-palate breadth. Drank over 90 minute period. Beautiful wine...

This keeps getting better but I do think it is at it's peak(and a glorious one at that!) This is a near flawless wine. Ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit. Tastes as if soaked in blackberry liqueur. Notes of bacon fat, new saddle leather, mesquite, cigar tobacco, and cedar all intermingle across the palate. The tannins are soft, rounded and silky smooth. Everything is perfectly balanced. And it all follows through on an elegant, lengthy finish with all the flavors harmoniously lingering on the palate. Truly special and spectacular.

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
