  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

Brooding, powerful aromas of apple and white flowers. Fat, rich and appley; rather robust and masculine, but with lovely sweetness and texture. Fuller than the Chevalier and in need of three or four years of bottle aging. But can't quite match the '97 for sheer material.

  • Burghound | Rating: 89

Classic Bƒtard in style with powerful and dense white fruit aromas followed by surprisingly fine and elegant flavors of excellent length. This will need 5 to 7 years to really be at its best and this definitely transcends the quality of the vintage and certainly avoids the heavy, in some cases even clumsy, character of many '98s.

This estate makes a whopping 10 barrels, or 250 cases, of Batard-Montrachet. The 1998 reveals tropical fruit aromas, intermingled with hints of English toffee. Rich, plum, and thick, this medium to full-bodied, pear, apple, vanilla, and buttered toast-flavored wine is concentrated, fresh, and intense.

  • The domaine of Etienne Sauzet is made up of 26 acres, much of it in the heart of the premier crus vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet. Gerard Boudot, owner and winemaker of Domaine Sauzet, is seeking 'maximum finesse and an individual expression of the climat.' M. Boudot, who married the granddaughter of the late Etienne Sauzet, runs the domaine and has modernized and improved the vinification, making the wines of this domaine among the most sought-after white wines of Burgundy.

The estate has been bottling 100% of its production since the early 1950s. Boudot ferments and ages 100% of the premiers crus and grand crus in small oak, one-third new. The average age of the vines is 30-35 years. These are textbook white burgundies, brimming with flavor, yet elegant and well-balanced.
