Bright ruby. Blackberry, bitter chocolate, cracked pepper, eucalyptus and a whiff of game on the complex nose. Fat, sweet and dense, with concentrated blackberry, dark chocolate and mint flavors. From small berries, and it shows in the wine intensity. Finishes with dusty, even, tongue-coating tannins and notes of mint, spicy oak and blackberry. Quite young and unevolved.

The 1998 The Dead Arm Shiraz (from a vineyard planted prior to 1890) is outrageously rich, spectacular stuff, the likes of which only Australia seems capable of making. Whiners may complain that it is too big, too rich, too flavorful, and too damn good, but this opaque purple-colored offering is loaded with blackberry liqueur, smoke, charcoal, pepper, cassis, and licorice. Unctuously-textured and full-bodied, but neither heavy nor overbearing, the wine's sweet tannin and low acidity are hidden in the cascade of fruit and glycerin that melt on the palate. This riveting, compelling effort can be drunk now, but promises to age well for two decades or more.

This is a round, generous Shiraz that's packed with layers of flavor, offering ripe berry, plum, exotic spices and a touch of mint as the long finish unfurls. Can go decades in the cellar. 6,500 cases made.

In 1984, head winemaker Chester d'Arenberg Osborn, the fourth generation d'Arenberg to work the estate, ambitiously began revitalizing the old vineyards and cellars, investing in improvements that would propel the winery into the next century. White wine production began, to complement the winery's existing production of Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, among other varieties. Being blessed with excellent McLaren Vale location, d'Arenberg strives to create wines that reflect the land's natural bounty. All their wines are fermented and produced in small batches, providing a larger pool of blending options for each final bottling. The winery's operation is truly "estate" from vineyard to bottle, quite an affair when over 30 different wines are produced each vintage. D'Arenberg is well-known for its The Dead Arm Shiraz, and produces two other "Icon" level wines from the oldest vines and best barrels: The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon and The Ironstone Pressings Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre.
