  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

Bright medium ruby. Aromatic nose combines roasted plum, black raspberry and lead pencil. Lush and lively in the mouth, with bright, complex flavors of raspberry, plum and smoked meat. Finishes with ripe, oak-sweetened tannins and excellent persistence. Superb for the vintage.

    Issue: May/June 2001
  • Rating: 90

The very severe selection because of the difficulties imposed by the 1998 vintage has resulted in only 1,100 cases of the 1998 Cardinale. It has turned out to be a full-bodied, deep, rich wine with plenty of black currant/cherry fruit infused with some cedar, spice box, tobacco, and toasty new oak. While it does not have much depth, volume and length, it is an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine that defies the vintage's so-so reputation for Cabernet and Merlot. Moreover, it should drink well for at least 15 or more years.
  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 88

Very complete, with ripe, supple blackberry, cedar, plum, herb, sage and dill flavors that are focused and elegant. Finishes with well-integrated tannins. Drink now through 2006. 1,100 cases made. (JL)

  • Cardinale Estate (currently owned by Kendall-Jackson) is located in Napa Valley's Oakville district. Its signature red is a Cabernet blend made from low-yielding vines situated in the Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges. Cardinale sources grapes from Keyes Vineyard on Howell Mountain, Veeder Peak Vineyard, and To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. The vines are green harvested, after which grapes are hand-sorted and pressed in traditional basket presses. The aging is done in 100% new French barrels. Since 2001 Christopher Carpenter has been the wine maker.
