($80) Full dark garnet with ruby highlights. Intensely perfumed nose suggests cinnamon, nutmeg, white pepper and violet. Deep raspberry and kirsch flavors coat the mouth, along with a complicating licorice nuance. Full-bodied and plush, with mouthcoating but pliant tannins. High-toned, silky, and pure, with a sweet lingering finish that evokes powdered cocoa. Luscious wine. (Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY)

Very dark red. It is hard to believe that Valdicava's 1997 Brunello is almost a decade old. Blessed with a huge, earthy nose and layers of densely packed fruit it could easily be mistaken for a much younger wine. As it sits in the glass underbrush, smoke and sweet dark fruit nuances emerge from this brooding, backward Brunello. Boasting notable concentration, it will continue to drink well for another 10-15 years and shows how well this producer's wines develop as they lose some of their baby-fat plumpness in the bottle.

Wonderful aromas of roses, ripe fruit and hints of spices. Full-bodied, with beautiful, silky tannins and a finish of flowers and fruit that lasts for minutes. 1,500 cases made.
I have loved the '97 vintage and I generally like Valdicava but this bottle was only decent. Either slightly past it's prime or wasn't that good to begin with.

This is a softer, rounder more medium bodied Valdicava than the 99. Very nice, delightful with food, but not explosive. Drinking perfectly now but showing signs of age. It is better at 2.5 hours than it was at 1.5 hous so with proper aeration, the score may rise.

This was the first wine that really hit my pleasure spot of the evening, so much so that I broadcast my impressions to the group, only to hear |that was my least favorite wine of the flight| spat right back at me (it so happens that the next wine was her favorite of the flight and I found it to be the least compelling, go figure)! I got such an alluring, layered nose that screamed of leather, cigar tobacco, pepper, porcini mushrooms and dusky spice. The palate kicked things into high gear, gushing w/ velvet textured blackberries, black cherries and toffee flavors that had no quit in them. A seamlessly integrated joyride from start to finish
