  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

A subtle, sweet wine, with intense aromas of honey, almond, spice and vanilla. Full-bodied and very sweet, with a lovely, ripe tropical fruit character. Super.

  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 18

Bright copper with spice and opulence. This property is on a roll. The palate is rich, full, floral and distinctly embryonic. The finish is still slightly astringent. Leave this one alone for the moment but it should be gorgeous eventually.

  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

Explosive, superripe aromas of orange marmalade and toffee; shows the tang of an Alsace SGN. Large-scaled, rich and thick with extract; juicy acids give it a mouthwatering quality. Intriguing gamey nuance adds complexity to the tropical fruit flavors. Very long, ripe finish tastes like a cross between late-harvest tokay and Gewrztraminer. Powerful but not heavy.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 90

The gorgeously perfumed and layered 1997 La Tour-Blanche displays a medium golden color, as well as a honeyed, kinky nose of buttered roasted fruit, quince, oranges, and minerals. Dense and full-bodied, with terrific fruit extraction, this unctuously-textured, sweet, full-bodied wine is one of the stars of the vintage. (No tasting note was provided in Issue 128. We have instead included the text of the tasting note from Issue 122)

  • Chateau La Tour Blanche looks out over Bommes, a charming small village inGironde, situated approximately 40 kilometres south of Bordeaux. The estate spreads over 70 hectares in the heart of the renowned Sauternes Appellation.

The actual vineyard is one single plot and covers 40 hectares. The remaining land is a combination of pine and poplarforests. At La Tour Blanche the vineyards are planted in the following proportions: 83% Semillon, 11.9% Sauvignon and 5.1% Muscadelle. Harvesting is done by a series of selective pickings which make take as many as 30 days over a period of 2 months to complete.

Each vintage is vinified and aged in entirely new French-oak barrels, and the ageing in barrels lasts from 16-18 months. Annual production averages approximately 45,000 bottles. In accordance with Chateau La Tour Blanche's policy of exceptional quality, certain vintages (although certified passable) are deemed unworthy of being bottled and are therefore not produced. This was the case for the recent 1992, 1993 and 2000 vintages.
