Complex, spicy aromatics lead to a ripe, supple, polished core of dusty currant, black cherry, black olive and plum, finishing with a touch of sage and anise. Drinkable now, though short-term cellaring should round out the tannins nicely. 6,500 cases made.

There are 4,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon from Staglin's Rutherford vineyard. (They are in the process of building caves under the hills adjacent to the vineyard.) This Cabernet includes a touch of Cabernet Franc in its blends, is aged in 100% French oak, and is quickly becoming a classic example of Rutherford Cabernet. The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon offers ripe cassis, new oak, tobacco, and spice box aromas and flavors. Rich, structured, moderately tannic, and long, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring, but should keep well for two decades.

Very deep crimson. Those warm bricks again! Sweet and rich and opulent. Very flattering and with nice freshness too. Still lots of tannin but this is much more convincing and complex and interesting than the 1996.

Color: Purple red core, garnet edges. Nose: Currants, flowers, pencil shavings and Rutherford dust. Some interesting savory notes after an hour. Palate: Still plenty of body, medium to more full, very focused - well made. Currants, mocha and spice, dusty cherry and sweet tobacco. Fine grained and focused tannins, great lush finish.

Fantastic. Beautiful secondary characteristics, with a glimpse into its next phase. Sadly, my last bottle; wish I had a few more.

Situated at the base of the Mayacamas Range on the Rutherford Bench, this sixty-one acre property has ideal soils, microclimate and location. The estate's potential was recognized by some of the first Napa Valley settlers and was planted to vineyards in the mid 1860's. Today the certified organic estate is home to the Staglins, fifty-one acres of vines, an underground winery, the historic homestead and a solar array.

Staglin is undoubtedly within the top tier of California Cabernet producers. In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label.
