Cherry-red, with a hint of development. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry, cola, mocha, nutmeg and mace. Plump, broad and oaky in the mouth; has plenty of texture but needs more focus. Finishes with light tannins and moderate length. The '97 Hirsch Vineyard bottling showed complex red fruit aromas but only modest nuance, and finished a bit skinny and dry.

This is ripe to the point of being roasted with distinct torrefaction notes plus hints of oak spice and coffee. In style, this is much like the Kistler-Kistler as the flavors are big, rich, powerful, structured and finish with a decidedly hot note. A dramatic wine that is not especially well balanced.

Pisoni Vineyard was started with cuttings from the Domaine de la Romane? Conti. 1997 was basically an ideal vintage for the Santa Lucia Highlands. Siduri aided Mother Nature by performing a number of green harvests to crop the harvest down to levels where exceptional wine can be made. This wine was the first Pisoni Vineyard made by Siduri ?obviously a prescient choice by the Lees. Early in its life, I was particularly enamored with its possibilities. The must had a 72-hour cold soak prior to starting fermentation. Interestingly, a part of the harvest was allowed to ferment on its indigenous yeasts ?philosophically using indigenous yeasts is my default position. The wine was raised in 60% new French oak and bottled unfiltered. Light to medium ruby red color with lots of thick colorless legs. A warm deep nose of sandalwood, light spice, slight oak, a touch of smoke, and candied stems. Gossamer elegance on the palate with well-integrated acidity and quite light tannins. Excellent length with persistent though light fruit ending with slight oak. Not as concentrated or as fruit filled as when last I tasted it, still the wine is enjoyable. It just has not aged as well as I originally prognosticated.

With an impressive portfolio of some of the best Pinot Noir vineyards in California, Adam and Dianna Lee have created quite a sensation. The Lees source from 27 different vineyards, and work closely with their growers to ensure the conditions in the vineyard lay a strong foundation for the resulting wines. Vineyards of note include Cargasacchi, Clos Pepe, Pisoni, and the famed Garys' and Rosella's. From these vineyards, individual blocks and clones are vinified separately to give more flexibility at blending time. All the Pinots are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
