In 1997, Bernard Schoffit crafted two Rieslings from his parcel on the steep Rangen vineyard. The vines located on the upper portion of the slope, furthest away from the Thur river, were not affected by botrytis and fashioned a superb wine that bears Schoffit's normal Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos St. Theobald label. It reveals a fresh nose of lemon drops and minerals. This dry wine is bright, highly concentrated, complex, and medium-to-full-bodied. Powerful and expansive minerals, stones, assorted citrus fruits, and smoke-like flavors inundate the taster's palate. Not surprisingly, it has a formidably long finish. It is an expressive and precise Riesling that will evolve gorgeously.

Intriguing and exotic. Overt aromas are almost herbaceous or like smoky green tea, then it turns to dried citrus and pineapple on the palate, with a rich texture and great length of flavor on the finish.

Slightly roasted, spicy nose. Spicy, lime-flavored fruit given shape by ripe acidity. Lovely flavor intensity and richness; not at all austere. Finishes longer and fatter than the Sommerberg but holds its shape nicely. Has about 20% more acidity than the Sommerberg, as well as slightly higher alcohol (13.6%) and residual sugar (8 grams/liter).
