1997 Ponzi Pinot Noir Reserve
UNITED STATES / OREGON /
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 87
Medium red. Currant, cherry, blackberry, pepper and caraway seed on the perfumed nose, along with strong oak notes of smoke, clove, cinnamon and scotch. Lively for the vintage, with tangy red fruit flavors and moderate texture and depth. Quite oaky, though: the wood here seems to simultaneously sweeten and dry the wine.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: March/April 2000Wine Advocate | Rating: 86
The ruby-colored 1997 Pinot Noir Reserve reveals metallic, white pepper, red berry, and cinnamon aromas. Light to medium-bodied, with flavors of bing cherries, this dry and tannic wine has some suppleness on the attack. Drink this offering over the next year, while the fruit has the upper hand over its structure.Author: Robert Parker

Dick and Nancy Ponzi are pioneer Oregon Pinot Noir producers, having founded their family winery in 1970. They have been at the forefront of most major winemaking and viticulture innovation in the state ever since. The Ponzi name is synonymous with the rise of the Willamette Valley as a major winegrowing region, and their commitment to the area manifests itself in their constant promotion of Oregon wines. Ponzi remains a truly family-run operation, with daughter Luisa Ponzi as winemaker and second-generation family members running the business side. In addition to Pinot Noir, the winery produces Pinot Gris and Blanc, Chardonnay, and Oregon oddities Arneis and Dolcetto.
