Medium ruby. Expressive aromas of plum, currant, game, leather and mint. Supple in the middle, with modest sweetness and depth. Finishes slightly dry, with a hint of unabsorbed acidity.

Some decent plum and berry character, with hints of herbs. Light-bodied, light finish. Slightly lighter than I remember. Drink now.

This wine, which had performed well from cask (particularly for the vintage), was severe, tannic, gritty, and attenuated on two of the three occasions it was tasted from bottle. I have lowered the score and added a question mark because the wine lacks the color saturation of the barrel samples, exhibits more herbaceousness, and the tannin is astringent. Perhaps it is going through an awkward stage of development, but right now I am less enthusiastic.

EXCELLENT AND VERY WELL MADE, NICE BALANCE BETWEEN FRUIT AND OAK...FRUIT STILL LIVELY AND IF WERE HAD A LITLE MORE DEPTH THIS WERE EXCELLENT BUT VERY NEAR.

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. The vineyards date to the early 18th century, and are planted on extremely gravelly, well-draining soil, typical of the best vineyards in Bordeaux. Plantings are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Chateau Pontet-Canet wines are very concentrated, yet elegant, and have tremendous aging potential. The estate produces a second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet, as well as an additional red blend called Benjamin de Pontet.
