($56) Dark ruby with a garnet core. Intriguing nose combines clove, juniper berry, white pepper and iris, plus a pronounced scent of cedar. Densely textured but crisp, with flavors of blackberry, sweet tobacco and licorice. Finishes with firm, somewhat dry tannins. A fine effort, but it could use a little more focus. The medium ruby/garnet-colored 1997 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a pleasant bouquet of balsam wood, loamy soil scents, dried herbs, tobacco, and sweet cherry and fig-like fruit. Medium-bodied, soft, and neither concentrated nor persistent on the palate, it will drink well for 10-12 years.
It took about 8 yrs for this wine to come together and put on weight in the bottle. But now it drinks like classic brunello, not modern style. Descent core of fruit, with well integrated alcohol and tannins.
