($56) Opaque garnet. Seductive aromas of clove, nutmeg and mocha. Concentrated and plush, with a tarry, roasted quality and loads of jammy dark fruit flavors. Licorice appears on the long finish. A substantial and compelling Brunello, even if it might be a bit more vibrant. (Vias Imports, New York, NY)

Glorious aromas of crushed berries, spices and cherries, with hints of cedar. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a thick and rich palate. Loads of cherry fruit. Luscious red. 450 cases made.

The impressive 1997 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits aromas of coffee, underbrush, and sweet black cherry and currant fruit in its medium to full-bodied, dense, concentrated personality with no hard edges. Enjoy this opulent, precocious, accessible Brunello over the next 12-13 years. This is an outstanding effort.

May have waited a little too ling on this one. Color is rusty orange. Boquet is subtle. All the tannins are gone. Prominent oak and tobacco flavors.

La Poderina specializes in crafting premier Brunello from its 49-hectare estate in the Castel-nuovo dell'Abate district in southeast Montalcino. The "Poggio Banale" bottling is an exceptional wine that showcases this estate's ability to seamlessly enhance traditional Brunello character with progressive winery innovation. The winemaker, Lorenzo Landi has created a profound wine of power and balance that will age gracefully for upwards of 10+ years. This is a boutique estate that deserves focus, as the leap in quality over the last few years has been exponential. Poderina also produces a Rosso di Montalcino, a Virgulto Rosso di Toscana, and a white Moscadello di Montalcino.
