  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

Bright ruby. Oaky aromas of black fruits, dark chocolate and mint. Very ripe, thick and rich; lovely sweetness and breadth of texture. Grew lusher as it opened in the glass. Enticing flavor of black raspberry. Finishes very long, with big, ripe tannins. A lovely example of the vintage.

Massive, with wonderful richness, depth and concentration, this Cabernet blend has layers of complex currant, black cherry, plum, vanilla and blackberry and a long, detailed, firmly tannic finish. 5,200 cases made.

Sorry to see my last of these go, but it was delicious. Firing on all cylinders in a fruit bomb extravaganza! I wish I had the patience to keep my others this long.

Merryvale was the first winery built in Napa Valley following the repeal of Prohibition. In the heart of America's premier wine region, passionate winemaking thrives in the care of the Schlatter family, along with Winemakers Sean Foster and Graham Wehmeier. By maintaining a shared vision -- turning exceptional Napa Valley grapes into world class wine-- Merryvale has earned international acclaim for wines of outstanding quality.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
